Dr James Dobson, one of the most influential Christian voices of the past 50 years, passed away on 21 August, 2025 aged 89.

From child psychologist to global influence

James Dobson began his career as a child psychologist before becoming a bestselling author and speaker. In 1977, he founded Focus on the Family in California, starting with a simple desire “to help hurting families” — a vision inspired by his father’s prayers.

The ministry grew from a small office into a worldwide organisation, reaching millions through books, broadcasts, films, and resources. Today, Focus on the Family continues to serve families across more than 60 countries, including here in Australia.

Dr James Dobson passed away on 21 August, 2025 aged 89.

Legacy of faith and family

Dr Dobson’s influence was seen and felt not only through his professional life but also in his unwavering Christian faith. He believed that strong families were vital for both the Church and society. His best-selling books, including ‘Dare to Discipline’ and ‘The Strong-Willed Child’ became household staples for Christian parents.

“My legacy doesn’t matter.” Dr Dobson reportedly said, when asked why he dedicated his life to ministry. “It isn’t important that I be remembered. It’s important that when I stand before the Lord, he says, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ I want to finish strong.”

Remembered with love

Countless individuals have shared how Dr Dobson’s teaching shaped their lives: “Dr Dobson, you are the parent that I never had. I can’t imagine where my life would be without you. Thank you for teaching me truth and how to be a wife and a mother.”

Others remembered his courage and conviction. Dr Al Mohler, theologian and former Focus on the Family board member, reflected: “The very time that so many families were facing unprecedented pressures, Jim Dobson arrived on the scene as a trustworthy, convictional, Christian guide. His impact can only be explained by the sovereignty of God.”

Pastor Tony Evans also shared his gratitude: “I will be eternally grateful for the life and love of Jim Dobson and what it has and continues to mean… we will always publicly affirm what Jim Dobson has meant to us.”

Continuing impact

Dr Dobson later established Family Talk in 2010, continuing his mission of equipping families and speaking into cultural issues from a Christian perspective.

His legacy is seen in the millions of marriages strengthened, children discipled, and families restored through his ministry. As one listener summed up: “You taught us how to love our husbands, how to train our children. You encouraged us when we were down. You made us laugh and cry and inspired us to lift our hands in worship and praise to our God.”
