Have you ever received a promise from God that felt too big or too impossible to believe?
Key points:
- God often speaks promises into our lives that seem humanly impossible, promises that stretch our faith and require divine intervention.
- In Mary’s story, we see the compassion of God, who understands our weakness and strengthens our faith.
- Our task, like Mary’s, is to respond with humble surrender: “I am the Lord’s servant… may your word to me be fulfilled.”
Mary likely understood that feeling well.
After all, she had just encountered the angel Gabriel, who told her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and you will give birth to a son. You are to call him Jesus. He will be called the Son of the Most High, and his kingdom will never end.”
It must have been both astonishing and overwhelming. God had chosen Mary, an ordinary teenage girl from an obscure village with no status or influence, to play a vital role in his redemptive plan.
She may have wondered why she was chosen, but any sense of wonder would soon have collided with the painful realities ahead: the whispers surrounding her unexpected pregnancy, the shame her parents felt, and Joseph’s intention to quietly end their engagement.

God often speaks promises into our lives that seem humanly impossible, promises that stretch our faith and require divine intervention. And while Mary responded to Gabriel with simple, sincere trust, she still had to bear the weight of reconciling God’s word with the circumstances unfolding around her.
So what does God do?
In her waiting, Mary sought someone who understood what it meant to receive a miraculous promise. She travelled to her cousin Elizabeth, who herself had conceived a child despite years of barrenness.
In Mary’s story, we see the compassion of God, who understands our weakness and strengthens our faith.
We can imagine Mary’s thoughts as she made the journey: What will I even say? How do I explain this? The Holy Spirit overshadowing me? Carrying the saviour of the world? But she never needed to explain. As soon as Mary greeted her, Elizabeth was filled with the Spirit and began to prophesy: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!”
It was a profound and tender moment. In Mary’s story, we see the compassion of God, who understands our weakness and strengthens our faith. He knows how difficult it can be to trust his promises when our circumstances seem to contradict them. And in those moments, he often speaks through another person—just as he did through Elizabeth.
Our task, like Mary’s, is to respond with humble surrender: “I am the Lord’s servant… may your word to me be fulfilled.”
The Holy Spirit still inspires people today to speak encouragement, affirmation, and divine perspective into our lives.
This is the beauty of the Spirit poured out on all people. We were never meant to walk the journey of faith alone. When God reveals his purposes for our lives, he also provides community, others who will stand with us and believe alongside us.
