After over four decades in pastoral ministry, Max Lucado has found himself returning to the same three tools in counselling, conversation and sermons.

Key points:

  • “Picky thinking” means choosing to filter your thoughts rather than letting them run unchecked.

  • “Uproot and replant” means to remove harmful thoughts and replace them with Scripture.

Tools he believes can help anyone navigate their mental and spiritual wellbeing.

“There’s a real challenge in our world today of mental health, of learning to manage our thoughts and not letting our thoughts manage us,” Max told Hope 103.2’s UNDISTRACTED podcast.

“I isolated these three tools [because] all of us need to learn to manage our thoughts.”

The first tool Max outlines is what he calls “picky thinking” – choosing to filter your thoughts rather than letting them run unchecked.

“Just because you have a thought, you don’t have to think it,” Max said.

“Be a picky thinker. Ask yourself, would Jesus think this way?”

The second tool is to “uproot and replant” – remove harmful thoughts and replace them with Scripture.

“Rather than give in to those thoughts of guilt, we uproot them like a weed,” Max said.

“And we replant with truth like, ‘There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.’”

His third tool? Identify the “UFOs”: untruths, false narratives, and overreactions.

“Uproot and replant” means to remove harmful thoughts and replace them with Scripture.

“What I’ve learned is that when we’re helping people, we have to go upstream,” Max said.

“You can’t just tell someone to stop being angry. You need to help them find the untruth that’s shaping their reaction.”

These tools aren’t just theory for Max. He recently had shoulder surgery and found himself fighting “doomsday” thoughts.

“I’d say, ‘Lord, it’s just going to hurt the rest of my life,’” Max said.

“But then I’d remember, He’s my healer. And I’d pray, ‘Help me think rightly today.’”

Throughout the conversation, Max gently pointed to the deeper truth: transformation starts in the mind, and Scripture is more than just helpful – it’s holy.

“Scripture is a supernatural tool,” Max said.

“Scripture is the sword of the Holy Spirit, according to Ephesians, chapter 6.

“The Word of God, according to the book of Hebrews, is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It’s able to pierce to joint and marrow, soul and spirit.

“In other words, it goes where we cannot go.”

As well as managing our own thoughts, Max encourages us to remember that God thinks about us too.

“There’s never a day that God’s not thinking about me,” Max said.

“The book of Psalms says that God has more thoughts about us than there are grains of sand along the seashore. He thinks about us all the time.

“That makes me feel very, very special.”

Max Lucado’s book Tame Your Thoughts is out now.
